LECTURE

INTRO TO AFTER EFFECTS

Basic understanding of how to link Adobe Photoshop layers into After Effects. Understanding the compositing concept from still images to moving images.

What is After Effects?

  • Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
  • Used in film, TV, and web video creation.
  • Used in the post-production phase and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery.
  • Allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.
  • Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story.
1. Pre-compositing in Adobe Photoshop
  • Transforming still images (graphic elements and photography) into moving images.
  • Photoshop is a platform for compositing the layers.
  • Layers need to be arranged and renamed accordingly so that they will be organized and easy to be animated in After Effects.
2. Pre-compositing in Adobe After Effects
  • Animating layers sequences from various elements and platforms.
  • Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effect, motion graphics, and compositing application.
  • Import elements such as images, videos, vectors, and more into After Effects.
  • All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platform, such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • After Effects files do not embed their media; they link to it.

TUTORIAL

We conducted this week's class online. Mr. Fauzi went through everyone's work and checked each student's progress. He reminded us to manage our time and complete our tasks as soon as possible. He also provided several tutorial videos on Google Classroom to guide us on how to create animations.

PROJECT 4: SELF-TITLED

1. Sketches

I sketched two different style options for my work, and I've decided to digitize sketch #2.

Sketch #1:

Figure 2 Sketch #2

2. Digital Poster

After deciding which sketch I want to digitize, I begin my process!

Figure 3 Progress (Adobe Photoshop)

I am adding vintage elements to the background to create an old, nostalgic vibe. In the process of digitizing, I struggled a bit with choosing the right elements to add and where to place them to improve the overall composition. I created two different composition and color designs, both in the same vintage style, and I plan to ask Mr. Fauzi which one he prefers. The two posters below are my first attempts.

Attempt #1:

Figure 4 & 5 Digital Posters (Attempt #1)

After receiving feedback from Mr. Fauzi, he chose poster two (the one on the right) for my animation. He also suggested scaling down the picture of my pet because it was drawing more attention than my photography. He advised me to make my own photography slightly bigger. Below is my readjusted poster, and the animation will be shown in the next blog. For more information, please refer to Week 12!
