LECTURE

POSTER DESIGN

The fundamental principles of design are Emphasis, Balance and alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space.

Why are design principle important? They act as a roadmap, helping you communicate clearly, guide the viewer's eye and create designs that feel intentional rather than accidental.

The 7 principles of poster design:

1. Emphasis
  • The focal point of a design and the order of importance of each element within a design.

2. Balance and alignment
  • Never forget that every element you place on a page has a weight. The weight can come from color, size, or texture.
  • Without balance, your audience will feel as if their eye is sliding off the page.
  • Symmetrical design creates balance through equally weighted elements aligned on either side of a center line.
  • Asymmetrical design uses opposite weights to create a composition that is not even but still has equilibrium.

3. Contrast
  • Contrast creates space and difference between elements in your design.
  • Background needs to be significantly different from the color of your elements, so they work harmoniously together and are readable.

4. Repetition
  • It's often said that repetition unifies and strengthens a design.

5. Proportion
  • Proportion is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other.
  • Helps to approach your design in sections, instead of as a whole.

6. Movement
  • Controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your audience.
  • Movement creates the story or the narrative of your work

7. White Space
  • White space is exactly that the empty page around the elements in your composition.

TUTORIAL

This week's tutorial was conducted online due to road closures for the ASEAN meeting. Mr. Fauzi reminded us to submit our Task 1 assignment. We were then given our Task 2 assignment, and Mr. Fauzi explained the tasks we need to complete. He also showed us some examples to help us understand the requirements.

PHOTOGRAPHY BASIC

Mr. Fauzi uploaded videos in Google Classroom demonstrating how to make a DIY photography studio at home and a video explaining photography basics in 10 minutes.

PRACTICAL

PROJECT 2B: CONCEPTUAL PHOTO MANIPULATION

CATEGORY: PHOTOSHOOT MANIPULATION

We are assigned to create 1 photo manipulation by combining 2 or more photos. We needed to conduct research, prepare a references mood board, write a summary of our idea, and create a sketch of our concept.

2. SUMMARY ABOUT MY IDEAS:

After doing some research, what came to my mind was that I tend to use objects such as food and items in our daily life. I felt that food, in particular, offers a lot of creative possibilities.

Here are the objects I found around my house and the ideas I have for each group:

#1 Corgi and Bread/Loaf:
I always see my dog (a Corgi) as a bread/loaf because of its color and body shape. I think it looks fluffy and adorable.

#2 Perfume and Orange:

I noticed that the shape of the orange and my perfume bottle look quite similar. Inspired by one of my senior's works, in which she photographed a spray bottle and an onion. I was motivated to create an orange-scented perfume concept for my project!

#3 Banana and Clothes Hanger:

The shape of a banana is similar to the bottom part of a clothes hanger. It almost looks like the banana could hang clothes! I think it would fit well with the clothes hanger.

#4 Shuttlecock and Egg:
I was inspired by the research (image #3) I did. I noticed that the round front part of a shuttlecock has a similar shape to an egg. I thought it would be fun if the front part of a shuttlecock were actually an egg/ a cracked egg.

#5 Matchstick and Strawberry:
What if a matchstick had a strawberry as its match head? Would it create a strawberry-flavored spark... maybe? Since both have the same bright red color, combining them might smell nice!
