LECTURE

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

What is double exposure photography?
Double exposure photography refers to merging multiple images. The goal is to make them surreal, emotional, or humorous. At first, the double exposure effect may look complicated. But it's easy to make in-camera and in Adobe Photoshop. You don't need a double exposure camera; there are a few other ways you can create them.

Ways to create:

1. Using the Tilt-Shift Effect
  • Tilt-Shift tool will transform your photos into soft works of art.
  • Blur one of your photos instead of the entire image to be extra creative. Or blur everything except for one important detail.
  • Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift
2. Create a fake reflection
  • Creating a double exposure-exposure with the help of a separate window photo.
  • An example (Fig 1) of the main subject surface with raindrops and bokeh (aesthetic quality of blur/background blur). This help to add interesting textures to a multiple exposure photography.

3. Experiment with simple portraits and details textured
  • Combining something plain with something complicated will give you a balanced result.
4. Convert you results to Black and White
  • A lack of color will strengthen the emotions in your double-exposure images.
  • It gives them a unique depth.
5. Work with silhouette
  • Silhouette would give you a fun and double challenge. And an opportunity to show very creative sides of yourself.
6. Pick two random photos
  • A random process doesn't mean it's not meaningful.
  • A lot of double exposures photography were happy accidents. But they led to great feedback and even greater creative growth.
7. Make simple objects look fascinating
  • Take photos of everyday objects and make them look like something else.
8. Use shadow
  • Shadows are as effective as silhouettes in this genre.
  • Take photos of a few shadows and turn them into something beautiful.

Photoshop: Blend Modes

Blend Modes is an experimental process, it's nearly impossible to predict the results.

TUTORIAL

This week's tutorial was conducted online. Mr. Fauzi briefed us on the double exposure exercise and explained the concept of double exposure to us.

PRACTICAL

Week 5:

PROJECT 2A: DOUBLE EXPOSURE

PROJECT 2A (PART 1): DOUBLE EXPOSURE FOLLOW TUTORIAL

For part 1 of the exercise, we followed a tutorial video provided in Google Classroom. After completing that, we were assigned to create a second double exposure piece using our own photo.

PROJECT 2A (PART 2): MY OWN DOUBLE EXPOSURE

Besides using my own photo, I also searched for images online to create my double exposure. My idea was to create a chill, summery vacation vibe with a sea theme. To make that happen, I added a few elements related to summer.

PART 2 (MY OWN DOUBLE EXPOSURE):

Other than that, I created another double exposure using the images/elements as in figure 12 (clouds, forest, and birds). However, instead of using the same photo again, I replaced it with another photo of myself and applied a different gradient color and concept.
